On 24 January 2019, Gerry Daly, 57, was charged with dangerous driving causing the death of Jacqueline Griffin, 39, after his car collided with hers at junction five of the M50 in Dublin, forcing her vehicle into crash barriers. Griffin died of catastrophic head injuries. Daly pleaded not guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court, where the defence argued he was in a severe hypoglycaemic state due to type one diabetes and did not make a conscious decision to drive. On 24 November 2023, a jury returned a not guilty verdict after six hours and 50 minutes of deliberation.
