Jacob Napolitano, a US man from California aged 28 (reports differ, giving his age as 37), was arrested at Dublin Airport on 5 May 2025 after 17.4 kg of herbal cannabis was found in vacuum-packed packages in his baggage following his arrival on an Aer Lingus flight from Los Angeles. He was stopped at the Blue Channel at Terminal 2 after a customs officer observed suspicious behaviour, and his bags were X-rayed to reveal the packages. Napolitano pleaded guilty to unlawful importation of a controlled substance, telling the court he had not packed the bag but knew it contained cannabis, and said he was smuggling the drugs to pay off a $10,000 gambling debt. He was sentenced to four years' imprisonment, backdated to 5 May 2025, with the judge describing the offence as a huge misjudgement.
