  Jack Sheehan, a 27-year-old man from west Clare, was arrested after his car veered off the road into a ditch near Doonbeg at around 2.30am on December 3, 2023. Gardaí said he was twice over the legal alcohol limit for driving, and he is contesting the drink driving charge. His solicitor advanced a sleepwalking defence, supported by expert evidence from Dr John Garvey that Sheehan drove as a result of a NREM parasomnia. At Kilrush District Court the judge noted inconsistencies in Sheehan's evidence and wanted a digital audio recording of the expert's evidence, and the case was adjourned to December 17th.
