  • Man sentenced to community service for theft and deception in Dublin Theft; deception · Co. Dublin

Robert Long, 32, a man from Carndonagh, Co Donegal, pleaded guilty to six charges of theft and two charges of deception for defrauding six potential tenants of almost €11,000 in a rental scam at Longboat Quay, Grand Canal Dock, Dublin, between 29 July and 1 August 2017. The victims had responded to an advert on Daft.ie, paid cash towards deposits, signed lease agreements, and were provided with keys, only to find another person living in the apartment when they arrived to move in. Long acted as the current tenant while an unidentified man known as Jack Lyndsey posed as the landlord and took the deposits. He pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court in July 2021, and on 2 February 2022 was sentenced to 240 hours of community service within 18 months in lieu of a two-year prison term.
