On 18 July 2021, Pte Philip McCarthy allegedly told fellow recruit Trooper Jack Canty he was either leaving in the morning or leaving with broken ribs, then held him in a headlock, punched him in the torso and choked him in a room at Sarsfield Barracks, Limerick. McCarthy pleaded not guilty to 12 charges at a summary court martial in McKee Barracks in Dublin in April 2022. Following a five-day trial, military judge Colonel Michael Campion found him guilty of false imprisonment, two counts of assault and three counts of conduct prejudicial to good order and discipline, but acquitted him of two counts of assault causing harm. In February 2023, McCarthy was sentenced to seven days detention at Curragh Camp followed by discharge from the Defence Forces.
