  • Man charged with stealing €2,000 from Letterkenny cathedral during funeral Theft · Co. Donegal

    On Sunday 14 April 2024, at about 1pm, cash was allegedly taken from the sacristy of St Eunan's Cathedral in Letterkenny, Co Donegal, while a funeral was taking place after a midday Funeral Mass. Ireneusz Matras, a 43-year-old Polish man of Fortwell, Letterkenny, was arrested shortly afterwards and charged with stealing €1,754.55 and £6.13 stg belonging to parish priest Monsignor Kevin Gillespie. He appeared at Letterkenny District Court on Monday 15 April 2024, where the DPP directed summary disposal and his solicitor said he had instructions to plead guilty. The judge ordered a Probation and Welfare report and remanded him on bail to July 8.
