A 63-year-old Dublin Bus driver was struck in the back of the head with a 12-inch metal object and punched from behind while walking home after his shift on Beresford Place, near the Custom House, in Dublin city centre at around 2pm on 19 August 2025. The attack was described as random and unprovoked, and the driver suffered swelling to his head and neck. Ionut Christian Biraz, a 39-year-old Romanian national of no fixed address who arrived in Ireland three months ago, was arrested with the help of pepper spray and charged with assault causing harm and production of a weapon. He appeared before Judge Brennan at Dublin District Court on 20 August, where bail was refused on grounds of the seriousness of the case and public safety, legal aid was granted, and the case was recommended to proceed to the Circuit Court. He is due to appear again at Cloverhill District Court on 21 August 2025.
