On 18 December 2025, Emma Mackarel, a 37-year-old Irish woman from Clones, Co Monaghan, was killed when her car collided with a lorry on the N2 at Mullaghnee, Annalitten, outside Castleblayney, at approximately 8am. Ion Bucurica, a 56-year-old Romanian man, was arrested at the scene and charged with dangerous driving causing death. He appeared via video link before Monaghan District Court on 5 January 2026 and was remanded until 12 January. On 12 January 2026, bail was denied over Garda concerns he was a flight risk, and he was remanded into custody until 26 January 2026.
