latest first- Man sentenced to seven years for false imprisonment in Carrick-on-Shannon False imprisonment · Co. Leitrim
On 15 April 2018 at 1.50am, Joseph Farrell, a 33-year-old man from Gurteen, Co Sligo, followed Inelda Del Grosso, a 32-year-old Italian au pair, through Carrick-on-Shannon, Co Leitrim, before tapping her on the shoulder, placing a gloved hand across her mouth and dragging her to waste ground at Summerhill where he pinned her to the ground until a passer-by interrupted. Gardaí identified Farrell from CCTV almost immediately and arrested him on 2 May 2018; DNA testing later found the victim's DNA on the outside of his gloves and his own on the inside, leading to a second arrest. Farrell pleaded guilty to false imprisonment at Carrick-on-Shannon Circuit Court. Judge John Aylmer sentenced him to seven years, with the final two years suspended on his own bond of €100, and directed him to engage with the Probation Service and take no alcohol or unprescribed drugs for two years.
