    Ilie Ungurean, 35, was charged with dangerous driving after Gardaí said he was driving a 2016 Volkswagen Passat at 197kph in a 120km zone on the M7 motorway at Ballydavis, Co Laois, on 9 April 2023. Three other people were in the car. The defence solicitor said his client was from Romania, a solar panel fitter who had just returned from years in Germany and Austria and believed he was back in Germany. His case was heard at Portlaoise District Court, where the judge fixed recognisance in case of appeal. In May 2023 he was fined €1,000 and disqualified from driving for two years, which is the latest development.
