Ilamar Rodrigues Ribeiro, a 54-year-old Brazilian man (one report says 52), was arrested at Dublin Airport on 16 November 2023 when he returned from Brazil. The investigation began after two women made trafficking allegations, and gardaí linked about ten rental properties in rural towns to him, which were allegedly used as brothels after he rented them under false pretences. He was charged, refused bail at Dublin District Court and remanded in custody, then on 14 March 2025 pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to 19 sample counts and to possession of child sexual abuse material. On 26 March 2025 Judge Patricia Ryan imposed a global sentence of ten and a half years with the final 18 months suspended for three years, backdated to November 2023, although several headlines report a nine-year sentence.
