Sophie Toscan du Plantier, a 39-year-old French filmmaker, was beaten to death with a rock at her holiday home in Toormore, outside Schull, West Cork, on the night of 22 to 23 December 1996. English journalist Ian Bailey, 66, was twice arrested in connection with the murder but was never charged in Ireland; a Paris court convicted him in absentia in May 2019 and sentenced him to 25 years, though Irish courts refused to extradite him. Bailey died in January 2024, and a Garda cold case review has been ongoing since 2022. In October 2024, Gardaí seized an unedited podcast recording of Bailey, and in May 2026 they are seeking international help under the Prum Convention to identify DNA found on one of the victim's boots.

Sophie Toscan du Plantier, a 38-year-old French filmmaker, was bludgeoned to death with a rock and a concrete block on a lane 100 yards from her holiday home in Toormore, near Schull, west Cork, in December 1996. English journalist Ian Bailey, 66, was identified as the prime suspect and arrested in February 1997 but was never charged in Ireland; he was convicted in absentia in Paris in 2019 and sentenced to 25 years, but Irish courts refused extradition. Bailey died in January 2024 at age 66, and the Garda Serious Crime Review Team, which began its cold case review in June 2022, has since examined over 1,600 witness statements. The team engaged US DNA collection experts M-Vac Systems to examine exhibits, and a Touch DNA technique has now raised a DNA profile from the murder rock for the first time. Gardaí are awaiting results from Irish forensic scientists, with findings expected in coming months.

Sophie Toscan du Plantier, a 39-year-old French film producer and mother of one, was beaten to death with a rock and concrete block outside her holiday home near Schull, West Cork, on 23 December 1996. English man Ian Bailey, 66, was the prime suspect; he was arrested twice in Ireland but never charged, and a French court convicted him in absentia in 2019 and sentenced him to 25 years, though Irish courts refused to extradite him on three occasions. Bailey died of a heart attack in Bantry in January 2024. A Garda serious crime review team has been examining the case since June 2022, and the investigation remains active with DNA experts and FBI cooperation as of December 2025.

Ian Bailey, a 66-year-old man, was stopped at a checkpoint near Schull, Co Cork, on 25 August 2019 after failing a roadside breath test, and was found with a small tin of cannabis; blood samples later tested positive for cannabis. He was convicted of drug driving and possession of cannabis by Judge John King at Skibbereen District Court (reported as May 2021 at Bantry District Court in one account) and fined €700 with a 12-month driving disqualification. His appeal, in which his barrister argued the oral fluid drug test was administered unlawfully, was heard at Cork Circuit Court in January 2024. Judge Helen Boyle allowed the appeal and struck out the convictions nine days after Bailey died from a suspected heart attack in Bantry on 21 January 2024.

He was arrested on suspicion of drink-driving after failing three times to provide an adequate breath sample, and was taken to Bantry Garda Station where he gave a urine sample. Bailey denies the offence, claims the breath test machine was defective, and told friends he had only a pint of beer and a glass of wine. He is awaiting the urine results and faces a fine, a driving ban, and penalty points if convicted.

Ian Bailey, a 64-year-old English man, was assaulted in Bantry, West Cork, at approximately 11:30pm on 30 November 2022, after going to meet two women he had contacted online whom he believed to be TikTok fans. A group of young men jumped out of a car and attacked him, kicking him in the head a number of times and leaving him battered and bloodied with a cut to the bridge of his nose, though he escaped without serious injury. Bailey reported the incident to An Garda Síochána, and the attack is now suspected to have been a deliberate setup. Two men have been questioned by Gardaí, and no decision has been made on whether to charge anyone, with the investigation ongoing.

Ian Bailey, a former journalist, was verbally abused at Schull Country Market in Cork on Sunday 31 July 2022. He described the incident as a verbal and offensive tirade and said he was shocked when he realised he was being shouted at. Bailey lodged a formal complaint to the Gardaí over the incident.
