On March 29, 2023, gardaí were called to the Emergency Department of University Hospital Limerick, where they found Hugh McGrath, a 39-year-old man, intoxicated and behaving aggressively. He was arrested after making racially insulting remarks to a security guard and abusing staff and others in the waiting room. McGrath later pleaded guilty to public order offences at Limerick District Court. The case was reported on September 8, 2023, when Judge Patricia Harney sentenced him to one month in jail, plus 12 days consecutive for failing to appear in court.
