On March 6, 2022, Henrique Freitas, a 47-year-old Portuguese national, sexually assaulted a 19-year-old Leaving Cert student in Limerick after he was asked to give her a lift to a house where she had left her school bag. He drove her to his apartment, carried out a series of sexual acts and told her 'this will be our secret'. Her sister reported the assault to gardaí the same day, gardaí recovered his DNA from her underwear, and he declined to answer questions when formally interviewed.
