  • Pair ordered to donate €10,000 over bird nest destruction in Laois Wildlife protection offence · Co. Laois

Hazel Lindsay and Gerard Bracken (63) pleaded guilty at Portlaoise District Court to causing injury to protected birds and wilful destruction of wild bird nests after 57 House Martin nests were blasted from a house due for sale at Cullenagh, Laois, in July 2025. The NPWS received a complaint on 25 July and estimated that 205 birds were killed. Lindsay, who works for an estate agent, directed the works to prepare the house for sale, and Bracken, who was paid €400 to power-wash the property, returned the day after a tenant's complaint email and destroyed more nests. The pair were ordered to donate €10,000 to charity under the Probation Act, with the matter adjourned to 18 September.
