Bill Irish, a 30-year-old man from Kilkenny, was convicted by a jury of sexual assault and oral rape of his younger cousin Hannah Irish, a 25-year-old woman. The offences, which included forced touching, forced kissing and oral rape, took place between 2004 and 2010 near the cousins' homes and in places where they played. Irish was convicted at the Central Criminal Court in November 2023 and sentenced on 15 January 2024 to five and a half years in prison, the judge having set a headline sentence of 14 years reduced to seven years for his youth and mitigating circumstances, with the final 18 months suspended. The victim waived her anonymity so her abuser could be named.
