Graham McEvoy, 27, a convicted murderer, was charged with causing €1,348 of criminal damage to a cell in the violence reduction unit of Midlands Prison, Portlaoise, County Laois, on 20 January 2025. The damage included a toilet, sink internal mechanism and cell smoke detector. He appeared at Portlaoise District Court by video link and told Judge Susan Fay he did not need legal representation and wanted to plead guilty that day. The judge convicted him and sentenced him to three months. McEvoy said money was being taken from him each week to pay for the damage.

Graham McEvoy, a 26-year-old man serving a life sentence for murder, is accused of stabbing a prison officer below the eye with a shiv made from a sharpened toilet brush during an attempted escape on 8 May 2023. The incident occurred outside the Swiftcare Clinic in Smithfield, Dublin, while McEvoy was being escorted from Mountjoy Prison for a medical appointment. The officer suffered serious facial injuries and was treated in hospital. McEvoy pleaded guilty to assaulting a prison officer causing harm at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court, and on 14 June 2024 was sentenced to four years in prison.
