Graham Carey, a 42-year-old truck driver from Finglas, Dublin, was convicted of incitement to hatred after a jury found him guilty on two counts following a week-long trial at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court in April 2026. He was charged in February 2023 after making a 30-minute Instagram livestream on 30 January 2023 in which he allegedly said refugees were here to rape women and children and threatened to throw their bleeding corpses into the sea. The livestream followed an allegation by a local woman that she had been sexually assaulted by a refugee, though the alleged assault was carried out by a local white man. Carey, who represented himself at trial, pleaded not guilty to both offences under the Prohibition of Incitement to Hatred Act 1989. On 15 October 2026, Judge Patricia Ryan sentenced him to 18 months on each count to run consecutively, with the final year of the three-year sentence suspended on strict conditions.
