Glen Burke, 28, of Swords, Co Dublin, pleaded guilty to possession for sale or supply of MDMA and cocaine after his girlfriend Ailbhe Smith, 26, died of a cerebral bleed caused by MDMA toxicity and cocaine use on 1 October 2020. The pair, who had met online six weeks earlier, took two lines of cocaine and MDMA pills at Burke's home on the night of 30 September 2020. Burke rang 999 after Smith began sweating and an ambulance arrived ten minutes later. At Dublin Circuit Criminal Court on 15 December 2022, Judge Pauline Codd set a headline sentence of four years on each count but imposed a fully suspended two-year term, meaning Burke avoided a custodial sentence.
