A 25-year-old man, Gledson Marinho Dos Reis, kicked a referee in the midriff during a North East Football League Division One match at Dundalk Sports Centre, Co Louth, on 6 April 2023, leaving the official hospitalised with a broken rib. The referee, a member of the Louth branch of the Irish Soccer Referees Society, made a complaint at Dundalk Garda Station that night, and Gardaí, the FAI, and the NEFL launched investigations. Dos Reis, of Navan, pleaded guilty to assault causing harm at Dundalk District Court in February 2024. He was sentenced to 150 hours of community service in lieu of a two-month custodial sentence.
