    John Gilligan, a 74-year-old man and former Veronica Guerin murder suspect, was arrested in December 2024 after drugs and a gun were found at his home in Costa Blanca, Spain. He spent more than eight months in custody before paying €10,000 bail in August 2025. prosecutors have charged him with drug trafficking, belonging to a criminal gang, and ill-treatment, and are seeking a total custodial sentence of 11 years and three months. He now faces trial at a court in Elche, near Torrevieja in Alicante.
