latest first- Cork murder convict dies of Covid-19 in Midlands Prison Murder · Co. Cork
In November 2008, John Walsh, 56, from Mitchelstown, Cork, battered 25-year-old John McManus, who had a prior brain injury, to death in a flat on Wellington Road, Cork, and McManus's body, bearing over 100 injuries, was found dumped on waste ground. Walsh was convicted of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment in 2010, while his then-girlfriend Gillian Purcell was acquitted when a judge directed the jury to return a not guilty verdict due to lack of evidence. Walsh, who had been serving his sentence in Midlands Prison and was suffering from terminal cancer, contracted Covid-19 and was taken to Portlaoise Hospital, where he died on 15 November 2021, becoming the first prisoner in the Irish prison system to die of the virus behind bars.
