  Gheorghe Goidan, a 49-year-old Romanian man, was convicted in May 2019 of raping and sexually assaulting two women at hotels in Portlaoise and Galway city on 7 September 2017. He had pulled a knife on both women, who had moved to Ireland from abroad to work as prostitutes, before carrying out the separate attacks. He was sentenced to two consecutive terms of 10 years for each rape. The Court of Appeal dismissed his appeals against both conviction and sentence on 13 July 2022.

  Gheorghe Goidan, a 49-year-old Romanian man, contacted two non-Irish sex workers via a website and, on 7 September 2017, threatened them with a knife before assaulting and raping them in two separate attacks, first at a hotel in Portlaoise and then at the Maldron Hotel in Galway city. He was convicted by a jury at the Central Criminal Court on 14 May 2019 of rape, sexual assault, oral rape, anal rape and robbery, and sentenced to 20 years' imprisonment. His appeal against conviction and sentence was dismissed by Mr Justice Patrick McCarthy on 14 July 2022.
