On 29 September 2021, the Garda National Bureau of Criminal Investigation searched five properties in Dublin and seized 30kg of cannabis with an estimated street value of €600,000 and €47,000 in cash. A 61-year-old retired senior garda was arrested on suspicion of enhancing the ability of a criminal organisation to commit or facilitate a serious offence under section 72 of the Criminal Justice Act 2006. The investigation centres on the Hutch organised crime group, linked to the 2016 murder of David Byrne at the Regency Hotel, with the retired officer suspected of passing sensitive Garda information to the gang. His detention was extended by 72 hours at district court on 1 October, and he remained being questioned at Irishtown Garda Station as of 3 October. A serving detective garda was suspended from duty on 1 October in connection with the same investigation.
