latest first- Carton House operator appeals conviction for damaging Kildare protected habitat Breach of EU habitats regulations (damage to a Special Area of Conservation) · Co. Kildare
Belmullet Hospitality, which operates Carton House in Kildare, was convicted of two offences under the 2018 EU Habitats Regulations after vegetation was cut at Carton Demesne within the Rye Water Valley/Carton Special Area of Conservation between 9 and 12 August 2021, reportedly to remove a wasps' nest. Gerard McGovern, who carried out the work, was cautioned by the National Parks and Wildlife Service and declined to make a statement. The company was fined €8,000 at Naas District Court in November. It is now appealing the conviction and fine on procedural grounds, with the judge directing written submissions by 25 October and a ruling expected in December 2024.
