Gerard Mackin, a 40-year-old man from Belfast, was sentenced to three and a half years in prison at the Special Criminal Court for laundering €4,780, allegedly the proceeds of criminal behaviour, at Rhebogue Road, Limerick, on 17 April 2019. Gardaí discovered the cash and two phones in a car parked suspiciously outside his house. Mackin was arrested in Spain on a European Arrest Warrant and extradited to Ireland, where he was arrested at Dublin Airport in December 2022 and pleaded guilty in March 2023. The judge noted the money was handled in the context of serious organised criminality in the Limerick area.
