Gerard Keane, a 57-year-old man, was arrested on Ballymahon Street, Longford, at about 9.10pm on 7 April 2024, after gardaí received reports of a man acting suspiciously and found him very unsteady with a strong smell of liquor. He told gardaí 'f*ck off' and was arrested for his own safety. In the week before the case was reported in May 2024, he pleaded guilty without a solicitor at Longford District Court, where Judge Bernadette Owens noted he had no previous convictions. He was ordered to pay €250 to Bridgeways Family Resource Centre to avoid a criminal conviction, with until 15 May to make the payment.
