Gerard Hayes, a 39-year-old man from Cobh, Co Cork, was arrested on 10 February 2024 after Gardaí seized €62,800 in cash, a high-powered car, €3,500 of suspected cocaine and 180 rounds of ammunition during searches of residential properties in Cobh. He was stopped again on 20 February 2024 on Mespil Road in Dublin with close to €700,000 from a safety deposit box in the boot of his car, and arrested a third time on 5 May 2024 while on High Court bail. Hayes pleaded guilty to over 20 charges including possession of cocaine for sale or supply, possession of ammunition and silencers, and money laundering at Cork Circuit Criminal Court in June 2025. On 3 July 2025 he was sentenced to 12 years in prison with the final two years suspended, and a forfeiture order of €745,000 was made against property deemed to be proceeds of criminal conduct.
