On August 23, 2021, Gerard Hannick, a 58-year-old man of Kirwan Park, Mountmellick, Co Laois, had nine videos and two images of girls aged between six and 15 engaged in sexual acts on his Samsung phone at his address. He made full admissions when caught and admitted one count of possession of child pornography. At a previous hearing, the court at Portlaoise Circuit Court considered a suspended sentence, but he could not afford the €6,000 payment offered. In February 2024 he was sentenced to two years and six months in prison, with the final 15 months suspended for four years, and he is now on the sex offenders register.
