Gerard Duffy McAndrew, a 24-year-old man, was driving an Audi at an estimated 163km/h in a 50km/h zone in Rathowen, Westmeath, in the early hours of 23 March 2025 after using cannabis and drinking wine four times over the legal limit. His brother Stephen Murphy, 29, who had been adopted and recently reconnected with the family, was asleep in the passenger seat and was flung through the windscreen, losing his left leg from above the knee. McAndrew pleaded guilty in April 2026 at Mullingar Circuit Criminal Court to dangerous driving causing serious injury and driving without insurance. On 20 May 2026, Judge Keenan Johnson sentenced him to five years in prison, reduced from nine, with the final three years suspended for seven years on condition of no reoffending or drink or drugs, and banned him from driving for four years.
