Cases
latest first- Man sentenced to seven and a half years for manslaughter in Limerick Unlawful killing (manslaughter) · Co. Limerick
Gerard Curtin, a 43-year-old father of two, was found dead outside a house on Sarsfield Avenue in Garryowen, Limerick, in the early hours of Saturday 4 November 2023 after being struck four times with a shovel. Joseph Cahill, a 46-year-old man, was arrested at the scene and initially charged with causing serious harm before the charge was upgraded to murder in March 2024. Cahill pleaded guilty to the unlawful killing at the Central Criminal Court on 30 May 2025, the plea being accepted on the basis that he honestly believed he was protecting himself, his property and his children but used excessive force. On 24 November 2025, Justice Eileen Creedon sentenced him to seven and a half years, after a ten-year headline sentence was reduced to eight years with the final six months suspended.
