  • Man sentenced for rape and indecent assault of cousins in Roscommon Indecent assault · Co. Roscommon

Thomas Collins, 59, of Frenchpark, Co Roscommon, was sentenced on 17 December 2024 to 11½ years in jail for indecent assault, attempted rape and rape of his three young cousins, Gretta, Catherine and Gerard Conlon. The abuse occurred between 1978 and 1992, when the sisters were aged three and six and the brother was eight. Collins made admissions to gardaí in 1997 but was not charged for 26 years after a DPP decision in 2002 not to prosecute, following complaints being withdrawn under pressure from a garda sergeant. He was charged in 2023 and pleaded guilty to 21 sample counts in 2024. Ms Justice Mary Ellen Ring described the case as prolonged abuse over 14 years involving a significant breach of trust.
