A male garda was carried on top of a car for a distance before falling when the driver fled while officers were seizing the vehicle under the Road Traffic Act on the R403 close to the Barberstown Roundabout in Straffan, County Kildare, at approximately 11:45pm on Friday 26 August 2022. The garda sustained head and upper body injuries and was treated at Naas General Hospital before being discharged to recover at home. George Richard Asimionesei, a man aged 22, was arrested on Saturday 27 August following a search of the area and was charged with driving without a licence, driving without insurance, and two dangerous driving charges. He appeared before Naas District Court on 28 August where bail was refused on flight risk grounds and he was remanded in custody to appear again on 1 September, with further charges for endangerment and dangerous driving causing serious harm expected.
