  George Hackett, a 39-year-old man, broke into a house in Limerick on 3 March 2024 and stole a Revolut card belonging to a woman. He was arrested later that night after claiming he had a knife and threatening to use it, though no knife was recovered. Hackett, who had 204 previous convictions, pleaded guilty and was sentenced to six years in prison at Limerick Circuit Criminal Court on 19 December 2024. The Court of Appeal quashed the sentence in November 2025 and resentenced him to four years and six months, with the final six months suspended, setting a new headline term of six years.

  On 6 January 2023, gardaí on patrol on Mitchel Street, Thurles, County Tipperary, saw two men shouting abuse at each other, and after they did not stop when asked, one guard deployed incapacity spray and both men were arrested. At Thurles Garda Station, Hackett was taken to wash his eyes, and on his return he lunged at the second man, a man, and struck him in the head. Gardaí restrained and arrested Hackett for assault. Thurles District Court convicted George Hackett, 37, of section two assault, as reported on 30 June 2023. The judge then issued a bench warrant because Hackett was not in court.
