George Gibney, a 78-year-old Irish former national and Olympic swimming coach, was convicted by a Central Criminal Court jury in July 2026 of 39 counts of indecent assault and one count of attempted rape of four girls, including Orla Poole, aged between eight and 15 at the time. The alleged abuse took place at various locations in south Dublin, including Glenalbyn swimming pool in Stillorgan and Newpark Sports Centre in Blackrock, between 1971 and 1981. Gibney was arrested in Florida in July 2025 on an Irish extradition warrant, extradited to Ireland, and charged with 79 offences; he pleaded guilty to five counts at the start of his trial. On 12 October 2026, Judge Mícheál O'Higgins sentenced him to 15 years and six months in prison.

George Gibney was charged in 1993 with 27 counts of indecent assault and unlawful carnal knowledge of young swimmers under 15, with the alleged offences occurring between 1967 and 1981. His High Court application for judicial review was refused in July 1993, but the Supreme Court granted him leave to bring the review in December 1993. In July 1994, Gibney secured an injunction preventing the DPP from prosecuting him on the 27 charges. The following month, he left Ireland and was working as a swimming coach.

Gardaí investigated fresh allegations that George Gibney, a man whose age and nationality are not stated, abused children in his care as a swimming coach, with the alleged offences dating back several decades to his time at the Trojan swimming club in Dublin in the 1980s and 1990s. In 1993 Gibney was charged at Dún Laoghaire District Court with 27 counts of indecency against young swimmers and carnal knowledge of girls under 15, but that prosecution was halted after he won a judicial review, and he later left Ireland and was last known to be living in Orlando, Florida. A 2020 podcast documentary prompted more than a dozen new alleged victims to come forward. In November 2023 a Garda file on the new allegations was sent to the DPP, which is considering whether to charge him.
