  Geoffrey Lyons, a 54-year-old man of The Cottage, Macetown, Tara, Co Meath, was charged over the keeping of horses and ponies at Cloghan Stud, Garristown, and Danestown Stud, and over possession of untaxed tobacco. He pleaded guilty in March 2023 to five of 102 cruelty charges and to the tobacco possession. At Trim Circuit Court before Judge John Martin, he was sentenced to 3½ years with the final 18 months suspended, reported as two years in prison. The sentencing was reported on 16 February 2026, which is the latest development in the case.

  Geoffrey Lyons, a 54-year-old man with an address in Co Meath, was the subject of an early morning search of his home by Criminal Assets Bureau officers on 13 March 2023. The search found 90 horses at Cloghen Stud at Garristown and Danestown Stud, along with tobacco worth more than €700,000. Lyons pleaded guilty at Trim Circuit Court to five sample animal cruelty charges and to evading excise duty on tobacco. In February 2026 the court jailed him for two years and disqualified him from keeping horses for ten years, which is the latest development reported.
