Brendan McCormack, 34, was sentenced at Ennis Circuit Court in July 2023 to an eight-month suspended prison term after pleading guilty to assault causing harm. He punched Gearoid McHugh, 81, at the acute psychiatric unit at Ennis General Hospital around 8.30am on 24 April 2019, after being brought to the unit by gardaí as an involuntary admission about three hours earlier. McHugh suffered a brain injury and died at the hospital on 28 May 2019, though Judge Francis Comerford said it had not been established that the assault accelerated his death. The suspended sentence required McCormack to remain under the care of local mental health services and avoid illegal drugs and alcohol.
