  Between March 2021 and March 2022, Gavin Lawlor, then aged 20, assaulted his girlfriend, an 18-year-old woman, in County Wexford and coercively controlled her, including hitting her after she liked a TikTok video. Lawlor pleaded guilty in June 2024 to eight counts of assault causing harm and one count of coercive and controlling behaviour. In April 2025 Judge James McCourt at Wexford Circuit Court sentenced him to two years in prison with the final 12 months suspended, and the DPP sought a review on the grounds that the sentence was unduly lenient. The Court of Appeal has increased the sentence to four years with the final 12 months suspended, backdated to when he first went into custody, and ordered him to pay €2,000 to the victim, as reported in May 2026.
