Gary Simpson, 38, of North Circular Road, Dublin 7, was sentenced on 8 May 2026 to three years and nine months in prison, with the final nine months suspended for two years, for robbing €10 worth of blank name badges from a Dublin city centre hotel in the early hours of 26 June 2025. He pleaded guilty to one count of robbery on 9 March 2025 after being identified from CCTV footage and arrested nearby for a public order offence. During the incident, Simpson demanded cash from a male hotel staff member after being told no rooms were available, showed the handle of a knife in his pocket, and took the badges from the back office, after which the staff member pressed a panic button and called emergency services. Judge Orla Crowe at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court also directed 12 months of probation supervision for addiction services and vocational training, and the sentence was backdated to 9 March 2025.
