A 33-year-old man from Mullingar pleaded guilty in March 2025 to encouraging at least four girls in the United States to make and send him sexually explicit videos and images via a fake Facebook profile between October 2015 and September 2018. His laptop and phone contained 700 to 1,000 images and 30 videos of child sexual abuse material. The case came to light in 2018 when the online child protection unit in Dublin alerted Mullingar Garda station to a Facebook account under a different name. In January 2026, Gary Clavin was sentenced at Mullingar Circuit Criminal Court to four years' imprisonment with the final two years suspended.
