Cases
latest first- Two men jailed for attempted anal rape in Nenagh Sexual assault · Co. Tipperary
In 2016, Gary Byrne (36) and James Reilly (49), who are civil partners, sexually assaulted a 19-year-old man on the street in Nenagh, Co. Tipperary, then gave him a vodka and 7up that rendered him unable to move at their home, where Byrne attempted to anally rape him and Reilly did the same. The victim made a formal complaint to gardaí in the summer of 2023, and both men were arrested and interviewed in February 2024. They were convicted at a Central Criminal Court trial in Limerick earlier in 2026 of two counts of sexual assault and one of attempted anal rape, with Reilly also convicted of assault causing harm. On 22 June 2026, both men were sentenced to 10 years in prison, or 11 years with the final year suspended on strict conditions including three years post-release supervision.
Sentenced, 22 Jun 2026Convicted · 2 reports - Case adjourned over Garda retention of car in Dublin Abuse of authority (vehicle seizure and retention); property rights · Co. Dublin
Stephen Fowler, 62, from Clonsilla, Dublin 15, gave his friend Gary Byrne of Raheny, Dublin 5, full permission to use his 2014 registered Brown Skoda Octavia while he served a sentence in Portlaoise Prison. On 31 October 2021, the Gardaí detained and seized the car, questioning the validity of its insurance. Fowler and Byrne brought judicial review proceedings against the Garda Commissioner, with counsel arguing the seizure and continued retention amounted to a clear abuse of authority. Mr Justice Charles Meenan granted ex-parte permission to bring the challenge and adjourned the case to a date in February. Fowler was previously jailed for his role in a foiled murder plot connected to the Kinahan organised crime organisation.
