  Gareth O'Connor, a 27-year-old man, was assaulted in a one-punch attack during a row on Cow's Lane, Temple Bar, Dublin, on 10 September 2015 and died the following evening at St James's Hospital. A post-mortem found bleeding around and inside his brain, along with a moderate amount of cocaine and almost four times the legal limit of alcohol. The DPP directed no criminal proceedings in relation to his death. At an inquest at Dublin District Coroner's Court in November 2022, the pathologist advised the jury that a verdict of unlawful killing should not be considered, and the jury returned a narrative verdict.
