  Frederick Thompson, reported as 43 or 44, is charged with two counts of threatening to kill or cause serious harm and one count of assault causing harm against a prison officer at Portlaoise Prison, Dublin Road, Portlaoise, Co Laois, on dates given as 18 May 2022 and 17 November 2022. He first appeared at Portlaoise District Court on 15 February 2024 and was sent forward to Portlaoise Circuit Court on 28 February 2024 after the book of evidence was served. In January 2025 he applied to move his trial out of Portlaoise over security fears, and on 27 February 2025 he accepted a move to Tullamore Circuit Court, where the trial was listed for 1 July 2025. The latest development, on 8 October 2025, was a Tullamore Circuit Court hearing at which his application for Prison Service materials was adjourned to Portlaoise on 28 October.

  David 'Daithí' Douglas, a man aged 55, was shot six times on July 1, 2016, while on a meal break at his partner's shoe shop at Shoestown, Bridgefoot Street, Dublin 1. Lee Canavan, a man aged 36, pleaded not guilty to the murder and was found guilty by the Special Criminal Court in May 2021. He was jailed for life on June 3, 2021, and was the fourth man to be jailed in relation to the killing. Canavan has since appealed his conviction before the Court of Criminal Appeal, arguing the court erred in convicting him on joint enterprise, and the court reserved its judgment.
