  John Small, 51, of Coolarty, Co Longford, was sentenced at Longford Circuit Court in August 2025 for assaulting his brother Fred Small while he was in bed over a hygiene dispute between August 20 and 31, 2018. Fred suffered a ruptured spleen, significant stomach and chest injuries, and bruises to his ribs, and was admitted to the ICU where he was incoherent before recovering after two weeks in hospital. John Small, who called the ambulance, was originally charged with section 4 assault causing serious harm, later commuted to section 3, and pleaded guilty. He received a two-year and six-month prison sentence suspended for three years, with a €10,000 compensation order pledged towards his brother's welfare.
