• Double murderer Frank McCann withdraws parole bid in Rathfarnham Murder

  In 1992, Frank McCann, a 62-year-old swimming coach, set fire to the family house on Butterfield Avenue, Rathfarnham, killing his wife Esther McCann and 18-month-old foster child Jessica. His first trial was suspended when he set himself alight with a bottle of cologne, and he was given two life sentences in 1996. After nearly 30 years in jail, McCann was granted dusk-to-dawn day release in June 2022 and was due before the Statutory Parole Board at the end of that year. In June 2023, McCann withdrew his parole application, a move his brother Bernard said he welcomed, while the victims' families remained opposed to his release.
