Francis Bourne, a 47-year-old man from Buncrana, Co Donegal, pleaded guilty to raping his 28-year-old girlfriend at her home in November 2016. The woman, who had fallen asleep after cuddling, was awoken to find him having penetrative sex with her without her consent. She first reported the allegation to gardaí in June 2017. In January 2023, Mr Justice Paul McDermott at the Central Criminal Court sentenced Bourne to five years in prison with the final two years suspended, and ordered him not to approach the woman.
