latest first- 1920 Galway priest murder marked at centenary Murder · Co. Galway
Fr Michael Griffin, a 27-year-old priest serving in the parish of Rahoon, was taken from his home on Mountpelier Terrace in Galway on the night of 14 November 1920 and was believed to have been shot in the head at Lenaboy Castle by the Auxiliary Division of the RIC. His body was found on 20 November 1920 in a shallow grave in a bog at Cloghscoltia near Barna, County Galway. He was believed to have been targeted because of his republican sympathies. A military inquiry was held in lieu of an inquest, and the case was marked at its centenary in 2023.
