A 45-year-old man, James Rowan, of no fixed abode, is alleged to have broken into and set fire to the parochial house in Athy, Kildare, on 18 February 2024 after parish priest Fr Liam Rigney gave him €10. Entry was allegedly made by smashing two windows with a shovel, and hundreds of thousands of euro worth of damage was caused, rendering the house uninhabitable due to smoke and water damage. CCTV footage shows Rowan carrying a pillow case but does not show him setting the fire. He was arrested two days later and appeared before Naas District Court on 22 February, where he made no admissions and was refused bail and remanded in custody.
