latest first- Gardaí unlikely to prosecute Jesuits over historic child sexual abuse in Limerick Child sexual abuse (historic)
Fr Joseph Marmion, a UK native who died in 2000 at the age of 75, is the subject of at least ten allegations of sexual, physical or emotional abuse of pupils at the former Crescent College in Limerick City, where he taught from 1959 to 1962. In 1977, pupils at Belvedere College made disclosures of sexual abuse by Marmion to senior Jesuits, but the order dealt with the matter in-house and he was never questioned by civil authorities. The Jesuit Order alerted Gardaí in 2002, but enquiries have run cold due to Marmion's death. In December 2022, Gardaí said they are unlikely to prosecute any members of the Jesuits over the handling of the historic allegations.
