Eugene Gillespie, a 67-year-old retired telecoms broker, was assaulted at his home in Old Market Street, Sligo, on 19 September 2012 and found tied up in the hallway two days later, dying in hospital the following day from cardiac arrest. Simon McGinley, a 38-year-old man, pleaded not guilty to murder and admitted manslaughter, but the State rejected the plea and a jury unanimously convicted him of murder in April 2014. He was sentenced to life imprisonment and subsequently lost appeals against both his conviction and sentence. The Court of Appeal dismissed his latest appeal, based on new psychiatric evidence of possible schizophrenia at the time of the offence, on 14 October 2022.
